“When people say something, there are two types of saying. Logical and emotional.” Said Philip.
“There is no between them? I asked.
“You can mix it, but always something goes ahead.”
Mr. Philip Booth is the teacher of English Conversation class. This is one of our school’s non-credit EEPs, English Enrichment Program. So every student can join the class freely. It was the first meeting of the class.
As I entered the classroom with another Korean student 5 minutes before the class begins, Philip was already there writing something on the white board. Philip was young, black guy. He looked somewhat serious at first, but soon turned out to be a very fun guy. Because I and other students laughed a lot during the whole class, I couldn’t believe one and a half hours passed so fast.
Anyway, Philip introduced himself and made each of us do the same. Then he talked about logic and emotion in conversation. According to him, we can divide every spoken language in a conversation into two categories, logical and emotional. Logic contains evidence, facts and reasons etc, and emotion is anything related to feelings. He said men tend to say logically while women often say emotionally. And, he said although emotional talking has many good aspects, we should know how to deal with logical conversation because 90% of business talking is logical.
After the impressive class, when I was revising what I learned, I thought suddenly that maybe we can categorize the moves in Baduk, too. Let’s say there are logical moves and emotional moves. For instance, when I ask you ‘Why did you play there?’ If you answer ‘Cause I thought it was the biggest’. That is a logical move. Conversely, if you say ‘I thought black’s territory here was too big.’ It’s an emotional move.
Just like conversations there is nothing wrong with emotional moves. Because no one can read perfectly, you cannot play logical moves all the time. You should play relatively safe when you are leading, and overplay if you are obviously behind. Nevertheless, I guess about 90% of professional players’ moves are logical. Hopefully after learning how to be more logical, I would be able to play more logical moves!
